In the X century Abderraman III ordered some Yemeni Arabs to watch the coast to impede the entrance of the Normans, they did this from a watch tower also called "Vigia" or "Atalaya" this tower was called Al-Mariyat, the name of Almeria is derived from this tower and was founded by a settlement of Ibero Urci in the XI century, Almeria was the International Port of Al-Andalus.
